My name is Sherri Wright and I am running for the State Board of Education. There are four things you need to know about me and my beliefs:
- I am passionate about education.
- I believe in parental rights.
- I believe in school choice.
- Rural schools are not urban schools and should not be forced to be treated like one.
I have served in the education field for 40 years and have experience in classroom teaching, board work and administration. I have taught seventh grade language arts in Cortez, Colorado, and sixth grade language arts in San Antonio, Texas. I have served on the Cortez board for 20 years. I was a director at Battle Rock Charter School two years, CASB director 12 years and San Juan Vocational Technical School (College) eight years. On the Cortez board I have held all offices. SJVTC (San Juan Vocational Technical College) I held the offices of secretary and president.
While I was president at SJVTC, I helped move the community school to become a community college. When the funding ran out, I had to merge with another community college or close down. After much investigation and meetings, the merge was successful with PCC (Pueblo Community College). There were many meetings with PCC and Colorado Community College, but we still have a community college for our students.
Accountability is important! The superintendent and school board worked closely to bring the students scores up. After much data drilling it was decided to institute all teachers had to turn in lesson plans matching them to the state standards. This has caused a lot of heartache, but well worth it. The scores were high enough to take the district off state watch and allowed to keep improving.
I am a native Coloradan and understand Western Colorado’s way of life. I received my bachelor’s degree in Secondary Language Arts from Fort Lewis College and my master’s degree in Secondary Education from Adams State University. If you would like more information my website is sherri4co.com.
