I don’t hate GOP; I just want them gone

In a letter to the Herald (Oct. 1) Paul Wainwright of Hesperus asks, “Why do local Democrats harbor so much hate for me, our president and his party?”

Hi, Mr. Wainwright. I think I speak for almost every local Democrat in assuring you that we don’t hate you, and we try not to hate anybody.

I admit that it’s hard not to hate Trump. I certainly hate that he’s a congenital liar. According to Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post, who has been keeping track, Trump has told more than 5,000 lies since he’s been in office. This is not something we should get used to!

And I admit it’s hard not to hate the Republicans who control Congress. Among other failings, they have done nothing to prevent the Trump administration from ripping nearly 2,000 children away from their parents or guardians, sending them off to shelters scattered throughout the country, then ripping them away again, often in the middle of the night, and busing them to a “tent city” in a desert town in Texas, where they are being held in indefinite confinement.

In allowing this – in not showing even enough independence of spirit to call Trump out on it, much less restrain him – I think they’ve failed to meet the minimum standards of human decency and responsibility.

I don’t hate the Republican Party either. I just want their members voted out of office.
