The Ignacio High School baseball team saw another strong season come to a close Thursday.
In the opening round of the 2A District 3/5 baseball tournament, the fourth-seed Bobcats fell 14-7 to fifth-seed Dolores.
The Bobcats (9-10) led 5-4 after two innings, but a seven-run third inning for the Bears (7-11) broke the game open.
Timmy Plehinger-Williams took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats. He lasted 2 2/3 innings. He was charged with 10 runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batters. He struck out two.
Brandon Ward was the winning pitcher for Dolores, which will move on to face top-seed Paonia (19-0) in the district semifinals. Ward pitched 4 2/3 innings and was charged with seven runs on seven hits.
He struck out six and walked three.
Marcus Chapman led Ignacio at the plate. He went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored. Plehinger-Williams was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Rendon Mestas was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Trace Lovelace was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a run and an RBI. Zach Weinreich finished 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI.
During the 2017 season, Ignacio picked up big wins against Bayfield and Montezuma-Cortez. Both teams made regional tournaments in the Class 3A playoffs.
The season wasn’t quite as strong as the team’s 14-5 showing in 2016, but the Bobcats continue to show growth under head coach Robert Miller.
