Ignacio baseball splits with Trinidad

DHS lacrosse teams come up short

Ranked No. 7 in Class 2A going into Saturday’s doubleheader with Ignacio’s baseball team, the hosting Miners took Game 1, 4-1.

Senior Tyler Velasquez (W, CG; 7 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, HB, 14 K) outdueled Bobcat junior Eppie Quintana (L, CG; 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K).

Ignacio, however, turned the tables and took a 9-5 win in Game 2.

Phillip Quintana (5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, HB, 5 K) got the win on the mound for IHS, helping Ignacio depart Central Park having improved to 6-7 overall (still 2-2 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) heading into a SJBL showdown Tuesday versus 1A No. 6 Nucla (11-4, 3-1).

The Central Park split with THS (9-3 overall) earned Ignacio votes in the latest CHSAANow.com Class 2A poll, released Monday. Trinidad slipped two spots to No. 9.

Fruita snaps Durango’s winning streak

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team hosted its third league game in three days on Saturday. After taking down Montrose and Grand Junction the first two nights, however, Fruita Monument snapped the Demons’ winning streak Saturday 13-10. The Wildcats took an early 4-0 lead, but Anabel Carithers got DHS on the board and gave DHS a spark with 10 minutes left in the half. About 30 seconds later, Emmylou Willis scored another goal to cut Fruita’s lead in half at 4-2.

The teams traded goals after that, and Fruita took a 8-5 lead into halftime. The Wildcats, however, scored the first two goals of the second half to extend its lead. The Demons made a late run but were unable to catch the Wildcats.

Carithers scored four goals, including three in the first half, to lead DHS. Willis scored two goals, one in each half. Pearl Burbey scored twice in the second half while Victoria Barletta and Chloe Bowen each scored once.

DHS slipped to third in the 4A Mountain West with the loss at 7-4, 5-3. Fruita (5-8, 4-2) moved into second place while Grand Junction (5-8, 5-1) is in first.

The Demons will conclude its regular season this week with games at Battle Mountain (9-2, 7-2 4A Mountain East) Friday and at Roaring Fork (7-6, 4-5 4A Mountain East) on Saturday.

Boys lacrosse falls on the road

The Durango boys lacrosse team came up short in a pair of road games on Friday and Saturday. The Demons fell to Glenwood Springs 9-3, on Friday. On Saturday, they lost to Battle Mountain 16-3.

Jameson Connolly, Logan Gurule and Zak Wentworth scored goals against Glenwood, aided by assists from Jake Swift and Harris Halverstadt.

Gurule scored twice more against Battle Mountain and Henry Howe scored one. Swift was credited with an assist.

Goalie Bode Ensign made 14 saves against Glenwood and 14 against Battle Mountain. Alex Gnehm also got some time between the pipes and saved five Husky shots.

DHS is scheduled to play at Telluride on Thursday and then host Grand Junction at 4 p.m. Friday at Smith Field.
