After games were postponed last weekend because the closure of surrounding highway passes, the Ignacio Bobcats were eager to get back on the basketball court Tuesday.
Ignacio’s varsity boys claimed a 55-41 win at Telluride, while the girls varsity earned a 44-16 victory.
The boys (4-3, 3-0 San Juan Basin League) were led offensively by Kruz Pardo’s 13 points. Joaquin King scored nine, and Calvin Lovato finished with eight.
“Telluride is the second-best team in the league,” IHS boys coach Chris Valdez said. “They’re a great trapping team, and I thought we did good considering how fast they are.”
Kai Roubideaux had 10 rebounds for IHS, and Johnny Valdez led the team in steals with six. King added seven rebounds, and Lovato had six.
Freshman Morgan Herrera led the IHS girls (4-2, 2-0 SJBL) with 14 points. She finished with a double-double by adding 10 rebounds.
Avionne Gomez scored nine points on three made 3-pointers, and Kiana Valdez and Rachel Cooper each had six points.
“The girls hit the boards hard and played great team defense,” IHS assistant girls coach Trae Seibel said. “It was a great game to come back after not playing for seven days.”
Both teams will play again Thursday at home against Sargent.
“Usually we’re ranked. Now, we’re not,” Valdez said. “Now we’re playing a ranked team in Sargent. We’ll put some pressure on them instead of it being on us now. We gotta play loose, play our game and get an opportunity to knock of a ranked team.”
