Ignacio basketball bites Ridgway in 3rd quarters

IHS boys and girls take 2 in 2 days

One night after handling Telluride, the Ignacio High School boys and girls basketball teams picked up their second wins in as many days.

The IHS boys (12-4, 10-0 San Juan Basin League) roared past Ridgway, 88-24. Before the boys took the floor, the girls earned a 20-point win of their own, 53-33.

Ignacio’s boys made 14 3-pointers in the game and outscored the Demons 33-4 in the third quarter.

Lawrence Valdez poured in 18 points, Cole McCaw finished with 17 points, and Kai Roubideaux and Johnny Valdez each had 12 points in the win.

IHS led only 11-9 after the first quarter but pushed the lead to 32-14 by halftime.

Ignacio’s girls (11-5, 8-1 SJBL) were led by Avionne Gomez’s 11 points. Morgan Herrera and Alejandra Lujan each scored 10 points. Makayla Howell also had nine points, and Larissa Gallegos finished with seven points.

The game was still close at halftime, with the Bobcat girls up 24-16. They put it away in the third quarter by holding the Demons to only five points to establish a 12-point lead.

It’s a busy stretch on the calendar for both Bobcat teams. The girls will travel to face Pagosa Springs in a non-league game Tuesday. That will come against a top-10 Class 3A Pirates squad.

The boys will be off until Thursday, when they will host Mancos.
