Ignacio beats Dove Creek by 57

Top-ranked Bobcats boys basketball pace themselves for the Pirates

Starters optional.

Ignacio High School, the newly minted No. 1 team in Class 2A boys basketball, rested its starters for most of its San Juan Basin League opener in an 80-23 victory Saturday at Dove Creek.

Adison Jones still led IHS with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Clayton Jefferson scored 13 points.

Nick Herrera scored 10 points.

And all 11 boys on the IHS roster scored.

“Everything looked right,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said.

Jordan Ernst scored 12 points to lead the Bulldogs, and Valdez had high praise for the Dove Creek point guard.

IHS (9-0, 1-0 SJBL) will play at Class 3A defending champion Pagosa Springs on Tuesday, a team the Bobcats beat 56-33 earlier this season in Ignacio.

“We’ve got to turn the page,” said Valdez, who, despite that 23-point victory over the Pirates, admitted the Bobcats’ home win wasn’t their greatest effort. “We’ve got to turn it up a notch, play our game, limit our turnovers.”
