It was a romp Friday night for Ignacio High School football team.
The Bobcats rolled to a 35-0 victory at Dolores, and the victory could have been even bigger if two scores hadn’t been called back on penalties.
Joe Garcia ran for two of the Bobcats’ four offensive touchdowns in the win for Ignacio (3-5, 2-1 1A Southern Peaks League), as he ran 18 times for 75 yards. Dolores remained winless on the year at 0-8 and 0-3 in league.
Ignacio’s first drive went 13 plays and ended with a 1-yard TD run from Dylan Labarthe. The teams would then exchange punts, and it was the Ignacio defense that would score the second TD of the game.
Dolores QB Wyatt Koskie was under pressure from Ignacio’s Tyler Barnes and Clay Campbell and lost the ball. It was Stephan Gomez who scooped up the ball and ran 16 yards to the end zone to give the Bobcats a 14-0 lead.
It was then a Clay Campbell blocked punt for Ignacio that set the Bobcats up in scoring range at the Dolores 5-yard line. One play later, Gomez had run into the end zone to make it 21-0 with 11:50 to go in the second quarter.
It was an Ian Weinreich fumble recovery for Ignacio that again had the Bobcats in range, but a touchdown pass from Gabe Tucson to Colten Jackson was negated by a penalty, and the Ignacio drive would eventually end on downs.
Dolores looked to have life in the second quarter when Trey Seekins intercepted a Tucson pass, but the Bears were unable to do anything with the ball in Ignacio territory. IHS would take a 21-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bobcats marched 43 yards in six plays and scored on a 1-yard run by Tucson.
Late in the third quarter, Garcia added a 9-yard TD run to make it 35-0.
IHS would have a 55-yard punt return for a TD by Lawrence Toledo called back by a penalty. He got revenge later, as he intercepted a pass and returned it to the Dolores 5-yard line to effectively end the game, as Ignacio took a knee from there.
Next week, Ignacio will travel to La Jara to face No. 6 Centauri.
