Ignacio boys basketball floors Dolores

Hayes close to quadruple double

Wyatt Hayes nearly finished in double-digits in four statistical categories, and the Ignacio Bobcats demolished Dolores in the first Class 1A/2A San Juan Basin League game of the season.

Ignacio led 31-2 after one quarter, 42-7 at halftime and went on to win 72-30 to move to 5-0 overall this season.

Hayes, a senior guard, finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and seven assists in limited playing time. Anthony Manzanares finished with 15 points, scoring all of them in a 5-minute stretch in the first quarter before being taken out for the majority of the rest of the game.

“People were getting steals and rebounds and tossing them to Anthony, and he transferred those into layups and 3s,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said.

The Bobcats made 11 3-pointers in the game. Nicholas Herrera finished with eight points, Tucker Ward had seven and Austin McCaw finished with five points.

All 12 IHS players that traveled played and scored in the game.

“Dolores only had 10 points through three quarters, so all the ranks got in during the fourth quarter,” Valdez said. “We did a good job jumping out on them, but we still had turnovers we didn’t like.”

Dolores scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to Ignacio’s 16.

“Our shot selections was not real good in the fourth, but we gotta get these young kids seasoned and in the game,” Valdez said.

IHS will take a break until Jan. 9 when it travels to Montezuma-Cortez.
