Ignacio boys, girls win

ALAMOSA – The Ignacio High School boys and girls basketball teams earned their first victories of the season Thursday, both over Centauri in the Mountain Top Classic at Adams State College.

The boys easily won, 57-42, and the girls held on for a 47-44 win.

For the Bobcat boys (1-1), Wyatt Hayes led with 17 points, followed by Kruz Pardo with 10, Adison Jones nine and Nick Herrera with four points. Jones also led the Bobcats with 11 rebounds.

“It was never really close,” Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez said of the game. “We led by 16 at halftime and 17 at the end of the third. We kind of bounced back and got a victory.”

As did the girls after also opening the season with a loss at Pagosa Springs. But it wasn’t nearly as easy.

“We fouled out three starters in the fourth quarter, and the bench players really stepped up and closed out the game,” Ignacio girls’ head coach Shane Seibel said. “They had to step up and they did.”

Hilda Garcia led the Bobcats (1-1) with 14 points, followed by Sky Cotten with eight and Ellie Seibel, Cortney Baker and Alejandra Lujan with seven points each. Ellie Seibel, Lujan and Garcia led Ignacio with seven rebounds apiece, and Garcia added three steals.

“We played real well – great team defense,” Shane Seibel said.

The Mountain Top Classic continues Friday, with both Ignacio squads playing Glenwood Springs.
