The Ignacio boys wrestling team showed off its talents as five wrestlers finished fourth or better in their weight classes at the 2A Region 2 championships this past weekend to move on to the state championship at Ball Arena in Denver.

“Obviously the boys they came to compete and they've wrestled well,” Ignacio boys wrestling coach Jordan Larsen said. “Shoot, we had a great regional, probably one of the best we’ve had in a number of years and I’m really proud of them. Even the kids that didn't quite punch in to state. Josh Kerrigan making the top six at regionals at 120s, he had a great tournament to get there. He had to beat I think it was to two kids that had beaten him before just to get into the top six.”

Lincoln deKay continued his impressive season by winning the regional title at 150 pounds. He beat Abel Flowers from Buena Vista by decision in the first-place match. deKay is 37-1 this season.

At 106 pounds, Aven Bourriague finished in second place and heads to state with a 32-5 record. Zane Pontine finished third in the 144-pound division and has a 34-10 record heading into state.

Larsen was impressed by Kendrick Nossaman and Kyle Rima’s performances. Nossaman finished third at 165 pounds and will head into state with 26-15 record. Rima finished third at 285 and will advance to state at 27-8.

“Everybody that steps foot in that bracket has a shot at winning the state title, from the lowest to the to the undefeated guy,” Larsen said. “I think that we have some kids that have an actual possibility of pushing through to the state finals match or the placing rounds absolutely. Will we do it? That remains to be seen. But I definitely think that we have some good opportunities to push deep into the tournament.”
