It took the Ignacio High School football team almost four full games to get to 75 points in 2012.
The Bobcats did it in four quarters against Shiprock on Saturday in a 75-0 rout.
“The big thing was the experience of our kids,” IHS head coach Lupe Huerta said. “Defensively was the biggest change.”
IHS gave up 60 points in last season’s loss at Shiprock.
Huerta’s team grew a lot in the ensuing year, while the Chieftains brought a much younger roster to face the Bobcats.
IHS tight end Nick Herrera caught three touchdown passes in a breakout performance.
“We’ve been trying to get him more involved, and we were able to do that with mismatches,” Huerta said.
Mike Bettis and Adam Herrera contributed to the running game with “a couple touchdowns” each, according to Huerta.
Not wanting his team to dwell too much on the victory, Huerta said they should enjoy the victory for now, but “once Monday comes, it’s over.”
IHS (2-1) next will play Friday at the Montezuma-Cortez JV.
The Bobcats will return to varsity action Sept. 27 against Monte Vista at home, then will play at Centauri on Oct. 5, at Center on Oct. 11, at home against Del Norte on Oct. 18, then will finish their season at Dolores on Oct. 25.
