Ignacio girls Hilda Garcia, Avionne Gomez carry team past Telluride

IHS girls stay perfect in league

Another explosive third quarter sent the Ignacio Bobcats into a huge matchup with plenty of momentum.

One night after blasting Mancos 63-25, the Ignacio High School girls basketball team was at it again Saturday with a 66-12 win at Telluride.

The win improved the Bobcats to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Class 2A/1A San Juan Basin League.

Ignacio carried a 22-7 lead into the halftime break before outscoring Telluride 27-0 in the third quarter.

“Another huge third quarter. We kind of came out flat, couldn’t get layups to drop the first quarter, but then Hilda and Avionne caught fire,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said.

Hilda Garcia, a sophomore, led the team with 21 points and five assists. Avionne Gomez finished with 18 points and three rebounds.

Seibel also was happy with the play of his bench. Gibran Silva had five points, and Allisiana Baker added four points.

Telluride fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in league with the loss.

Ignacio now will have Monday to prepare for a big clash with Class 4A Durango High School (6-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Whalen Gymnasium on the Fort Lewis College campus in Durango.

“They’re a talented team, and we feel we’re a talented team,” Seibel said. “We want to give them a competitive game and see what happens in the fourth quarter.”
