Ignacio girls lose 1st round of state

The Ignacio Bobcat girls lost in the first round of 2A Great Eight action Thursday morning against first-ranked Yuma, 42-18.

The first quarter went well for Ignacio, ending 11-8 with the Bobcats only three points behind.

Larissa Gallegos scored a key three-pointer, with other points from Alejandra Lujan, and Makayla Howell and Morgan Hererra providing strong rebounding.

The young team seemed overwhelmed throughout the rest of the game, however.

Lujan was the Bobcat's high scorer with eight points. A strong Yuma defense kept Avionne Gomez down and she didn't score any points.

Morgan Herrera made seven points and had three rebounds at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland. Howell pulled down three rebounds for the team, as well.

Ignacio now moves into the consolation bracket of 2A state action. The Bobcats will play Simla at 8:45 a.m. today.

Simla lost to #4 WRAY, 66-25. The winners of Friday morning's games move into the consolation game playing for fifth place on Saturday morning.
