Ignacio girls rally past Sargent for big home win

Valdez leads IHS offense with 16 points

Tired legs caught up to the Ignacio High School girls basketball team on Friday. But the Bobcats had enough in the tank to beat the visiting Sargent Farmers.

Behind 16 points from Charlize Valdez and 12 from Jayden Brunson, Ignacio was able to run past Sargent for a 49-36 home win Friday.

It came one day after the short-handed Bobcats battled for an overtime win against Pagosa Springs.

“It was a slow start for us,” IHS head coach Justa Whitt said. “Last night’s game took a lot of energy. It took us until halftime to really start playing. Sargent is a good team, but we regrouped at halftime and buckled down to get the job done.”

IHS (6-1, 3-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) actually trailed 10-4 after one quarter but rallied with a 17-point second quarter to take a 21-20 lead at halftime.

Shelcie Gosney added eight points for the Bobcats, while Laci Brunson finished with seven.

Mary Willis led the Farmers (4-4, 2-1 2A Southern Peaks League) with 12 points.

IHS will finish a four-game week with a home game against Telluride on Saturday. It will be the third game in as many days for the Bobcats, luckily all at home.
