Ignacio holding municipal election today on sales tax

Polls open until 7 p.m.

The Town of Ignacio will hold municipal elections and a request to increase the town's sales tax on Tuesday. Polls are open until 7 p.m. at Ignacio Town Hall.

Three candidates are running for three open seats on the board: Dixie Ann Melton, Thomas Atencio and Sharon Craig. Incumbent Stella Cox is the only candidate for the mayor's seat.

In spite of only four people running for four open seats, the election still has to be held because the sales tax question is on the ballot.

If approved by voters, the sales tax could bring in an as much as $225,000 per year, said Mark Garcia, the town's interim manager. It would bring the town's sales tax from 2 percent to 3 percent. There is no sunset on the tax increase.

"We're just trying to catch up with maintenance that's been deferred for years," he said in a previous interview.

Bayfield will not hold municipal elections after four candidates filed to fill four open seats.

Brenna Morlan and Kelly Polites both filed to retain their trustee seats. Ashleigh Tarkington and David Black are the other two candidates who filed for the trustee positions.
