Ignacio honoring 'superhero' teacher

5K, fun run set for Saturday at SunUte

Superheroes come in all varieties, and on Saturday, students at Ignacio Elementary School will honor their own superhero and friend, Laura Wagner.

Wagner is a teacher at the school and became ill this fall, ultimately requiring brain surgery. She is recovering and hoping to return back to school for the 2017-18 school year.

Her colleague, Tracy Strohl, was attending the Community Cares 5K in Durango when she thought a similar event could help Wagner. She and Alison deKay, another IES teacher, began planning a Superhero 5K run and walk, set to start at 10 a.m. Saturday at SunUte Community Center in Ignacio. Registration is from 9 to 10 a.m.

In addition to the run and walk, the event will include face painting, music, and food.

To recognize their "super" teacher, IES students decorated superhero capes they can wear during Saturday's event. Durango Quilt Company donated the 423 pieces of fabric for the capes. All donations at the event will be given to Wagner, who visited the school last week in a superhero outfit and thanked the students for their support and friendship during her recovery.

For those who can't make the fun run, donations are also being accepted at the school. Students have made change jars in each classroom, and the class that raises the most funds wins a pizza party, kickball game and a class picture on the school's website.
