Ignacio hosts two games in one

Homecoming week provides enough distractions for a football team.

Throw senior night on top of that and Ignacio High School football head coach Lupe Huerta has to do a lot to keep his players’ attention on the Bobcats’ home game against Del Norte at 7 p.m. Friday.

“They have so many activities it’s hard to keep them focused,” Huerta said. “We keep doing the little things, running plays over and over again to keep them focused.”

Del Norte (0-7, 0-3 Southern Peaks League) has struggled both offensively and defensively, only scoring 19 points while allowing 344 this season.

Tigers quarterback Matt Mueller has completed less than 35 percent of his passes for 467 yards and two touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

No Del Norte running back has more than 212 yards on the season.

“Regardless of their record, we need to get better,” Huerta said.

Opponent aside, Huerta wants to send his seniors off on a positive note.

The team has a chance to pick up its fifth win – the Bobcats’ most since 2009 – and guarantee an above .500 finish for the first time in their careers.

“They don’t say much about it, but it’s important to the coaches to have them leave here on a positive note,” Huerta said of his seniors.
