Colorado Highway 172 was closed for more than an hour Saturday night after an Ignacio man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol hit another vehicle then fled the scene on foot.

Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, authorities received a report a crash at Highway 172 near the intersection of County Road 515, about 18 miles southeast of Durango and five miles north of Ignacio.

Colorado State Trooper Josiah Fuller said the crash occurred when a 2009 Toyota Camry was stopped on Highway 172, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear to be able to make a turn onto County Road 515.

While the Toyota Camry, which had its turn signals on, was waiting, a 2017 Chevy Silverado failed to stop and rear-ended the vehicle.

The driver, 25-year-old Micheal Mestas, of Ignacio, fled the scene on foot. After about 20 minutes running around the area, Mestas was apprehended in the yard of a residence, Fuller said.

Mestas was charged with careless driving, fleeing the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol, Fuller said.

The female driver of the Toyota Camry was uninjured. Only one person out of the three other occupants in Mestas’s vehicle was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, Fuller said.

Fuller said all occupants likely were wearing seat belts.

Highway 172 was closed about an hour and a half as a result of the crash.
