Ignacio middle and elementary schools have suspected COVID-19 cases

District quarantines 14 students, six staff members

The Ignacio School District announced new quarantines this week after two students reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, the district announced Wednesday.

The COVID-19 cases were being investigated by San Juan Basin Public Health, said Claire Ninde, spokeswoman. Out of caution, the school district quarantined 14 students and six teachers who had direct contact with the positive students.

“Please continue reinforcing the importance of social distancing, washing hands, wearing masks and staying home as much as possible,” said Rocco Fuschetto, Ignacio superintendent.

At Ignacio Middle School, seven students and five staff members were quarantined until Nov. 12 after being in direct contact with an eighth grade student who tested positive, Fuschetto said.

At the elementary school, seven third grade students and one staff member must quarantine until Nov. 17.

The district has divided its students into small, separated groups, called cohorts, to limit spread of the coronavirus. Because of the cohorts, fewer people were affected by the quarantine measures, Fuschetto said.

Parents will be called by the administration at each school if their student was directly involved, he said.

The cases come days after Liane Jollon, SJBPH executive director, urged community members to take precautions as coronavirus cases increase elsewhere across Colorado and the country. La Plata County has reported 450 cases among residents, an increase of 88 cases in two weeks.
