Ignacio offense in midseason form again against Bloomfield

McCaw belts first homer at new park

The baseball bats continued to sizzle Saturday for the Ignacio High School baseball team.

For the second consecutive game, the Bobcats’ offense scored more than 10 runs, and Ignacio (3-2) cruised to victory. Friday it was Center’s pitching that took the wrath of the Bobcats’ bats, as 16 runs crossed the plate. Saturday, the home team was at it again as IHS doubled up the Bloomfield Bobcats’ junior varsity squad 12-6.

Austin McCaw’s three-run home run in the third inning wasn’t just special because it gave Ignacio a lead they wouldn’t give up, it was also the first home run at Ignacio’s new diamond. The blast came after Bloomfield took a 3-2 lead in the top half of the inning.

Ignacio blew the game wide open with six runs in the fifth inning courtesy of run scoring doubles by Tucker Ward and Chance Hine. Ignacio junior pitcher Zach Weinreich took over for Juanito Medina after two innings and was credited with the win. Weinreich struck out four in two innings of work before McCaw and Raphael Herrera shut the lights out on Bloomfield.

In the two successful days, Ignacio’s offense put up 28 runs, and the power came from a variety of sources. McCaw was the slugger Saturday after Ward highlighted a Bobcats’ batting barrage on Friday going 4-for-4.

Ignacio will try to ride the hot offense to victory once again at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Ignacio against Class 1A No. 1 Dove Creek.
