After six years of construction, the Ignacio School District's final building is in place.
District employees and board members cut a red ribbon Thursday, April 14, to officially open the district's new transportation building on CR 319. The district's new middle school and remodeled elementary and high schools already are complete. There is a new administration building.
A few jokes were made about how long school bus drivers had been waiting for a new bus barn.
"It was two years ago, and it was 28 years ago, they told me we'd have a new bus barn," said Clyde Pearson, the district transportation director.
The new facility has multiple bays for bus repairs. The future of school buses will be propane-powered instead of diesel, he predicted.
The district bought 35 acres for the facility, leaving 25 available as land for a new school in the future, said Superintendent Rocco Fuschetto. "It will not be in my lifetime," he joked of any big construction projects in the future. Water and gas lines also were installed to the property.
