A suspect is in custody in connection with an alleged shooting Wednesday in Ignacio, said Town Manager Mark Garcia.
Garcia said the shooting near downtown prompted an immediate and heavy police response. Officers with Ignacio Police Department, Southern Ute Police Department and Southern Ute Rangers were called to the scene.
Garcia did not have additional information on the shooting. The Ignacio Police Department did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.
An employee at the Wells Fargo said the bank was put on lockdown around 2 p.m. As of 3:30 p.m., the bank was still on lockdown.
Jaycee Sindelar, an employee at Ignacio Floral & Gifts, 745 Goddard Ave., said she was working in the store's garden when she heard a shot around 2 p.m.
Sindelar said she heard five gunshots in total that came from the alley of Shoshone Avenue, a residential street off of Highway 172.
Two people ran off and an injured person was left behind and eventually taken to the hospital, Sindelar said.
Sindelar said she believes the shooting was drug-related. She said she's lived in Ignacio for 20 years, and recently, drugs are becoming more of a problem.
"It's been so sad to see drugs are getting so heavy," she said. "We have a rampant drug problem that's escalating to people being shot."
In February, another shooting occurred in Ignacio when a 25-year-old man shot a 47-year-old man.
The victim survived the shooting, but the suspect was killed a few weeks later after a standoff with Farmington Police.
The Ignacio Police Department has yet to release the details of what motivated that shooting.
