The Ignacio High School volleyball team took on Ridgway to open its season up on Friday. The first game was close, but Ignacio pulled out a 27-25 victory to take the early lead. After that, Ignacio dominated the next two sets, 25-10 and 25-12, to start its season 1-0.
On Tuesday, Ignacio made it two in a row by beating Mancos in three games.
Ignacio won that contest, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-10.
Ignacio and Bayfield cross-country, meanwhile, both competed in Cortez’s invitational on Friday.
In the boys’ race, Ignacio’s Eppie Quintana led his squad with a 13th-place finish in 20 minutes, 25 seconds.
Royce Hinojosa led Bayfield with a 16th-place finish in 20:44. Bayfield finished sixth as a team, 10 points ahead of Montezuma-Cortez. Four Ignacio fielded four runners in the meet, but did not post a team score. Phillip Quintana placed 29th in 22:05, Dylan McCaw finished 45th in 25:25, and Corey Gomez placed 50th in 26:17.
Tristan Sager (31st, 22:28), Sawyer Flinders (39th, 24:00), Liam Smith (44th, 25:22) and Will Kennedy-Jones (58th, 29:00) also scored for BHS.
Ignacio’s girls, meanwhile, finished fourth out of seven teams. Maci Barnes led the Bobcats with a 11th-place finish in 25:06.
Moriah Ashley placed 17th in 26:32, Avaleena Nanaeto finished 20th in 26:42, Lauren deKay placed 24th in 27:51, Alannah Gomez finished 30th in 29:32, and Zoey Ashley finished 36th in 31:13 for the Bobcats.
Bayfield didn’t post a girls team score, but had three Wolverines race. Abby Tate led BHS with a 13th-place finish in 25:50. Sage Flinders finished 35th in 30:57 while Teagan Schleeter crossed 48th in 36:35.
Alamosa won both team titles and both individual titles in Cortez. Isaac Higareda (17:41) and Sarah DeLaCerda (20:35) won the races.
