Ignacio takes third in Dawg Fight; Bayfield takes fifth

The Ignacio High School wrestling team saw success on Saturday at the Dawg Fight Invitational in Dove Creek. The Bobcats saw three first place finishes from their wrestlers as Ignacio as a team took third place.

John Mall won the overall tournament and Farmington took second.

Ignacio’s Lorenzo Peña took first place in the 160-pound weight class by going 5-0. His performance also landed him the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. This is Peña’s second Most Outstanding Wrestler award this season.

“I thought the team wrestled extremely tough,” Ignacio head coach Jason Larsen in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “Everyone went out and battled hard. Everyone got after it, win or lose. I was very pleased with the day.”

Other Ignacio top finishers were Stocker Robbins took first place in the 113-pound weight class by going 5-0, and Ethan Appenzeller who took first in the 138-pound weight class by going 4-0.

Tyler Beebe took third in the 132-weight class for Ignacio when he went 3-2 on the day. Timmy Plehinger took third in the 152-pound weight class by going 4-1, and Mikel Archuleta took sixth in the same weight class. Dustin Sanchez rounded it all out by taking fourth in the 145-weight class.

Bayfield takes Fifth

The Bayfield High School wrestling team took fifth place out of 14 teams in the Dawg Fight Invitational in Dove Creek. John Mall won the overall meet.

Bayfield’s Ryan Nava and Sam Westbrook both took first place in the 145-pound and 285-pound weight class, respectively. Garrett Beebe took second place in the 132-pound weight class. Both Jake Sandrey and Cody Speece took third in their respective weight classes as well. Cody Speece rounded out Bayfield’s day when he finished fifth in the 106-pound weight class.

“It went really well compared to Thursday night,” Bayfield head coach Neil Barnes said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “I’m very pleased. We came out off the bus and competed.”

Bayfield freshman Colby Baker got his first varsity win in the 106-pound weight class. Baker actually weighs in at 95 pounds.

“The way we battled today I have high expectations and hopes for next week,” said Barnes. “After Thursday, I told the boys I don’t care about wins and losses. We got off bus Thursday and were on their heels compared to today. We got off bus and battled and took it to people.”
