Victory comes on heels of win over Fairplay South Park

The Ignacio High School Volleycats, playing in a nonleague match Saturday in Creede, swept Crested Butte 25-14, 25-11, 25-10.

The victory came on the heels of a 25-18, 25-21, 25-11 sweep of 2A Fairplay South Park earlier in the day.

Senior Alexis Pontine Pontine served for 18 consecutive exchanges late in Game 2, with all but the last resulting in Ignacio points.

“I knew they were ranked lower,” said Pontine, who also enjoyed a five-ace run in Game 3, “but it was still good to come up here and play teams we haven’t played before.”

Crested Butte head coach Cierra Abbott seconded the motion.

"They have some phenomenal servers; they can do a lot of really, really good things with the ball, and they will keep you out of system“ Abbot said. ”But playing a high-level team like Ignacio, its really nice; you can see where your team steps up and plays up, and you start to see where your gaps are and how you can fill those gaps for your coming matches.“

Having logged four consecutive victories to improve to 8-2 (still 5-1 in the 2A/1A San Juan Basin League), Ignacio will next host Mancos (5-7 overall) Thursday night as part of Ignacio’s homecoming week.
