The town of Ignacio will have a higher sales tax.
In municipal elections Tuesday, voters approved the proposal by a 14-vote margin, with 36 votes for the tax increase, and 22 against. Sales taxes will increase by one cent, from seven to eight percent for all in-town purchases.
Also on Tuesday’s ballot, three candidates ran for three open seats on the board: Dixie Ann Melton, Thomas Atencio and Sharon Craig. Incumbent Stella Cox was the only candidate for the mayor’s seat.
Only four people ran for four open seats, but the election still had to be held because the sales tax question was on the ballot.
Mark Garcia, interim town manager, said the sales tax is projected to bring in as much as $225,000 in additional town revenues annually and will be used primarily for deferred maintenance.
