Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center turned a street corner in Ignacio into an art space to help Ignacio residents find a sense of community while isolated at home.

“This coronavirus is a huge event that happened. It’s caused sorrow and grief, and people are scared,” said Kasey Correia, executive director. “How can we, as artists in Dancing Spirit, come forward?”

Before the coronavirus crisis, students and community members would visit Dancing Spirit for pottery classes, gallery showings or open studio time. When the nonprofit closed in March because of the stay-at-home order, Correia said the community lost a place for artistic and emotional expression.

The Community Art Corner, at the intersection of Empire Street and Goddard Avenue, functions as an interactive community art space. Community members can make 2D and 3D art at home and bring it to the corner, or they can draw directly on the wall – while staying socially distant, she said.

“It’s important to be able to let your community know, ‘Hey, we got hope,’” Correia said.
