IHS boys fifth at Durango's meet

Doubling with greater ease than on a baseball diamond, Ignacio senior Adam Herrera helped the Bobcat boys place fifth at Tuesday's Ron Keller Invitational with a winning 11.88-second 100-meter dash and an even more impressive 21'4" in the long jump.

That effort was eight-and-three-quarters inches further than the 20'7.25" of runner-up Shane Bisogno, a senior at 4A Durango-the meet's hosting team.

Fourth in the long jump with a 19'4" hop, sophomore Wyatt Hayes was second in the 400, clocking 52.63 seconds, with senior Christian Knoll (54.35) close in fourth. Senior Kelton Richmond took third in the discus with a best of 121 feet, 6 inches, and Nick Herrera was third in the high jump at 5'6".

Half a tick behind Durango, IHS' 4x100 relay (Hayes, Knoll, junior Blaine Mickey, junior Miguel Perez) took second in 46.15 seconds, and the 4x2 - with Herrera replacing Mickey - was third in 1 minute, 36.07 seconds. Perez also brought home a fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with his 18.26.

Junior Keith Joosten's 11-foot pole vault was good for fourth, with Knoll (10'0") and junior Tyler Riepel (9'0") following in fifth and sixth. Richmond was seventh in the shot put with a 39'8.5" heave.

For the Lady Bobcats, who finished tenth as a team, freshman Jaylynn Herrera was ninth in the 100, running 15.43 seconds, and classmate Rachel Cooper ended likewise in the 3,200 with her 14:33.85.

As Ignacio's lone girls' relay entered, the 4x100 (junior Amya Bison, senior DaShona Lloyd, sophomore Chrystianne Valdez, Cooper) fared better, placing sixth with a time of 55.79. Herrera took sixth in the long jump with her 13'7", sophomore Ellie Seibel was seventh in the high jump at 4'6", and freshman Alana Watts (12th, 27'3.5") and senior Jayce Stricherz (14th, 26'2.5") were top-15 in the shot.

Having co-hosted the Abel Velasquez Invitational-finishing eighth on the girls' side and third on the boys'-last Saturday with 3A Bayfield, the 'Cats will return to Wolverine Country Stadium tomorrow to compete in the BHS Pine River Invitational.
