IHS eyes next rung on the track

One rung at a time, the Bobcats want to keep climbing the ladder.

This week’s rung: The Ignacio High School track team’s Abel Velasquez Invitational.

“Our goals for the meet (today) are for kids to continue to attain personal records so they can continue to move up that ladder of the state rankings,” IHS coach Kathy Herrera said. “And for them to have fun. That’s what this year is about – for them to compete and have fun and do great things with track.”

Starting at 9 a.m. today at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield, the Bobcats will be leaning on their relay teams to keep handing off strong results, despite running to the prom – or first, hair appointments – later in the afternoon.

Michelle Simmons provides the senior leadership for the girls teams, in addition to being a constant presence at the top of the high jump standings week in and week out and top finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Simmons is ranked seventh in Colorado Class 2A in the high jump and 10th in the 200.

Joined by Sky Cotton, Dashona Lloyd and Dynesha Drake, the 10th-ranked girls 4x100-meter relay team is looking to keep climbing, too.

The boys relays have a little more work to do.
