IHS girls upset top-10 team

No. 8 was no problem for the Ignacio High School girls basketball team.

IHS took down Class 2A No. 8 Rye 43-40 in its final game of the Mountain Top Classic on Saturday in Alamosa.

“It was just a great finish from our girls. We hit some crucial free throws down the stretch,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “Our girls played really good defense. That Rye’s a really good team, they have a good point guard. We were able to hold on for the win.”

IHS freshman Hilda Garcia led the team with 17 points, and senior Sky Cotten had 13.

Senior Bryna Burns scored 15 points to pace Rye.

“Really what we did was team first. We’re running the offense, we’re getting the ball, good ball movement, and the ball is finding our shooters’ hands,” Seibel said. “They’re not just chucking it up on the first pass.”

The Bobcats next will open their home season at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Center at the SunUte Community Center.
