For coming off a two-week break, the Ignacio High School wrestling team did well for itself at the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Saturday in Pagosa Springs.
Eight Bobcats made the podium in the 15-team tournament, and only two finished lower than fourth.
Returning state finalist Stocker Robbins won the 113-pound bracket. Tyler Beebe finished sixth at 132 pounds. Ethan Appenzeller took second at 138 pounds, losing to a “tough” kid from Aztec, according to IHS head coch Cody Haga. Lorenzo Peña finished fourth at 145 pounds, and his older brother, Isaac Peña took second at 152 pounds. Isaac Peña lost to a three-time state champion from Monticello.
“It was a really good match,” Haga said.
Davey Cooper took seventh at 170 pounds, Blaine Mickey finished fourth at 182 pounds, and Josh Gallegos rounded out the finishers with a fourth-place finish at heavyweight.
“All the boys that made it into the finals had really tough matches,” Haga said. “For coming off a good break, they showed up and performed well.”
IHS next will travel to Salida for a tournament next weekend.
