IHS turns the tables

Ignacio girls dismantle Telluride 59-19 in its finale

The Bobcats have been on the wrong end of plenty of lopsided games.

It was the Bobcats, however, who turned the table against Telluride on Saturday at Ignacio High School.

Ignacio (7-12, 5-3 San Juan Basin League) had no problem beating the Miners (0-16, 0-10 SJBL) in a 59-18 thumping in a SJBL girls basketball game. It came less than 24 hours after the Bobcats fell on the road 45-12 to Norwood.

“We had such a tough game against Norwood. The ladies bounced back to really aggressively play Telluride,” BHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “We really had our best defensive effort, and that sets the tone for districts coming up.”

Gabriela Garcia led the Bobcats offensively with 16 points.

“It took teamwork and integrity for us to get the win. We needed to get this win to get the second seed going into the district tournament, so we worked hard,” Garcia said. “I wish I could’ve done even more for my team, but I am glad I could help anyway I did.”

Ignacio forced 25 Telluride turnovers as the Miners struggled to get any shots in the air.

Nine Bobcats scored in the game. Seibel called it a sentimental night as Ignacio played its final regular-season game on its home court, which will undergo renovations this year.

“There was a lot of value to winning this game for our seniors who will never play here again,” Seibel said. “They have worked so hard. It is always emotional to play that last home game.”

Ignacio will begin play in the district tournament Friday in Mancos.

“We are not going to be afraid anymore in the first couple minutes of games. We are going to attack,” Garcia said.
