I feel that it is necessary that I share my feelings about the controversy surrounding flags and politics in the classrooms. The only flags that should be in our schools and classrooms are the American flag and Colorado state flag. These two flags cover all of the citizens of our republic and the majestic state of Colorado, in a neutral and inclusive standard.
I want my children’s classrooms to be focused on learning. I do not understand how one politically charged flag could be labeled as OK and others not be. Doesn’t the specific allowances of these while excluding others create a divisive environment? Unfortunately, the messaging of these flags have been perverted from being a sign of support into a sign of division. Do you realize that they actually create a feeling of intimidation to other students and staff? Because of these factors, they have no place in our classrooms.
Over time, classrooms have been introducing more and more ideology that is not necessary for providing a top-notch education. Our county and country have deep political divides and our classrooms should not be a place that makes it worse.
I want all kids to feel that their classroom is welcoming and they belong; a flag should not be the reason that they feel this way. If kids do not feel safe without these symbols, there is a larger problem within the district.
There’s a reason 9-R legal counsel says no to go down this path. I recommend you follow it.
