A proposal to update the outside of the Model Tire building was approved Wednesday by the Design Review Board.
The owners of CrossFit Catacombs intends to buy the Model Tire building and install new glass garage doors facing Main Avenue and a glass door on the north wall before moving the fitness business into the space.
“I think it’s an improvement,” board member Carolyn Hunter said.
The Model Tire mural on the north wall will remain in place.
At some point the owners would like to remove the blue tiles on the front of the building to reveal the original brick underneath, said CrossFit owner Tom Holcomb said.
“There’s nothing more we would like to do then restore it to its historic nature,” he said.
The board lauded the plans and encouraged Holcomb to consider pressure washing the north wall when they put in the new garage door.
The Crossfit owners plan to close the sale on the building in June and move the gym from its location on East Eighth Avenue to the Model Tire building in August.
