In Defense of Coach Bob Pietrack

I am pictured in the team photo published with the article, “Claims of slurs, bullying led to Fort Lewis College basketball coach’s resignation,” concerning Coach Bob Pietrack (Herald, Oct. 8). After reading the accusations about his coaching style and character, I felt compelled to respond.

I coached high school basketball in Pennsylvania from 1960 to 1990, later served as dean of students at the San Diego Golf Academy and the Professional Golfers Career College, and moved to the Durango area in 2020. In 2022-23, I volunteered as an assistant under Coach Pietrack until his departure in 2024.

During those two years, I never heard him use racist, homophobic or demeaning language toward anyone. I never heard the N-word or the term “ninja,” as implied, nor witnessed aggressive or bullying behavior. There was no talk among players or staff of a “toxic environment” or of players leaving if he returned.

Mr. Steffensen’s letter suggested he had firsthand knowledge of current events, yet he had already resigned in 2022, not 2023. The idea that Bob prioritized winning at all costs is false. He consistently emphasized character, community and player development. He cared deeply for his team and led with integrity and purpose.

When Bob resigned, he was devastated and sincerely regretted his past comments. Even Mr. Steffensen admitted, “I was wrong.” Shouldn’t the same grace be extended to Coach Pietrack?

Because of this one-sided portrayal, his career, relationships and reputation have been unfairly damaged.
