In Praise of Family Trees

Slight yet strong

in bearing

Natural by design

Bent a bit by time

in shapes as complex

as the seasons

and simple as the rain.

They stand through ages

Sun-drenched and dark

their branches span a century

Finely written in their bark.

Trees of lasting value

grow both great and small

taking root below the earth

and long history lies

beneath their lines

and calls us to remember

with minds and hearts:

the whole of Morley and Mary Jane

offer depths beyond

the sum of their deep parts.
