Most Republicans and Democrats have decided how they will vote for county commissioners. I suspect independents are waiting to hear arguments at debates, town hall meetings and their own research findings before choosing candidates.
La Plata County is facing several issues that will demand solid management and decision-making skills going forward. The county has been fortunate to have very high tax revenues from the natural gas industry for over 15 years, but that income has and will continue to decline. Several current and past commissioners have put special interest group agendas ahead of managing the government. The problems that develop from that strategy have been masked by a strong financial balance sheet, which hides inefficiencies and unnecessary spending.
Kayla Patterson and Lyle McKnight are running against the two incumbent commissioners, Gwen Lachelt and Julie Westendorff. Kayla and Lyle offer a clear choice between making changes to streamline many aspects of the La Plata county government (including the inefficiencies of the planning department) and four more years of the same policies.
If you have attended any county meetings, you probably noticed Kayla and Lyle were there. They have done more to gain insight into how our government works and the key issues than any candidates in a long time. Further, they have spent considerable time listening to citizens concerns, which include excessive time to obtain county permits to access water.
I could advance several facts related to Gwen and Julie that would concern voters, but the facts would be quickly be countered by powerful special interest groups.
For undecided voters, I suggest doing your own research on the incumbents and their links to special interest groups such as San Juan Citizens Alliance and Earthworks. Additionally, learn about the candidate’s views at upcoming public forums.
This fall our county will have the most important election in more than a decade with declining economic indicators, falling revenues and proposed tax increases taking center stage. I urge all voters to do some research and, most importantly, vote.
