On Saturday, Nov. 23, La Plata Community will come together to observe International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. This annual event, coordinated by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, offers a chance for survivors of suicide to connect, share their experiences and find support in their grief journey. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is observed the Saturday before Thanksgiving as communities across the world host opportunities for growth and grief. Durango and surrounding areas have participated in this event for several years as it has been an important part of ongoing community efforts to support those who have lost loved ones to suicide.
This event brings survivors of suicide together and provides a safe space to share and learn from grief journeys. There will be opportunities to participate in and learn about self-care activities, connect over a shared meal (provided), and grieve the loss of loved ones through a lens of acceptance and support. Those who attend are welcome to share their journey and participate, or simply observe and listen.
This event is made possible by the Cody Project, The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado, La Plata County Suicide Prevention Collaborative and Axis Health System. Participants will be supported by these organizations through delivery of on-site therapists, resource referrals, and self-care tools.
