Investigate cellphones at time of crashes

Again – in today’s paper (Herald, Feb. 16), another serious crash by a “distracted driver.” That’s at least four in La Plata County in the last year where the driver was not under the “influence” but was distracted enough to cause a collision resulting in death in several cases.

I wonder what was distracting them? I think that the Colorado rules are that the investigating officer has to have a warrant before examining a cellphone – and I’m betting that’s the root cause of those accidents. Personally, I came within a whisker of being T-boned at the Three Springs light by a driver coming through a red light at highway speed. I will always wonder why the driver was distracted. At least I’m still alive to wonder.

What would have to be done to change the law to allow an investigating officer the right to examine the state of the driver’s cellphone at the instant of the crash?
