A man was sentenced Tuesday to probation for his role in a fight that included a stabbing and a gunshot fired in a January melee at the Iron Horse Inn in north Durango.

Christopher Lewis, a 29-year-old single father, pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, in an agreement with the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. He could have been sentenced to up to two years in jail.

Lewis, who has already served about 4½ months in jail, appeared before Senior Judge Raymond Satter on Tuesday in La Plata County Court.

“I believe he’s done ample time in jail for this offense,” said defense attorney Christian Hatfield.

Lewis is accused of attacking Brian Picard early Jan. 14 during a fight in a room at the Iron Horse Inn.

Law enforcement said Picard went to the Iron Horse Inn to get some cannabis and was assaulted by Ian Taylor. Lewis joined after Picard was on the ground in the fetal position.

As Picard was taking blows from the two men, he grabbed a knife attached to his belt and stabbed Taylor in the leg.

While running away, Brandy Carl shot a handgun at Picard, firing a bullet “inches from his face,” according to law enforcement.

Both Carl and Taylor pleaded guilty. A District Court judge sentenced Taylor to one year in the La Plata County Jail. Carl got, in effect, three years’ probation.

Hatfield said Tuesday that Lewis was trying to break up the fight between Taylor and Picard. Judge Satter waived Lewis’ court fines and fees given the length of his pre-sentence confinement.
