I am concerned with how frequently my friends express anxiety about bringing a child into this world.
I’m sure every generation has expressed some similar sentiment. Having children during World War II could not have been easy. There are common and natural fears as well: the economy is unpredictable; I don’t know if I would make a good father; I don’t have enough money saved.
However, concerns have now taken on a new tenor. Our reality sometimes feels inalterable. We are headed down a path that is irrevocably altering our planet. The people of Isle de Jean Charles, La., have already been pushed out of their community due to rising sea levels.
Shifting energy sources in Southwest Colorado will take years. We must start now. Investing in renewable energy is investing in our collective future. The La Plata Electric Association Board recently voted to form a subcommittee to complete a strategic review of all of LPEA’s long-term options. This review is a wise step toward understanding changes in the energy industry. It will help LPEA better strategize to maintain affordable electricity rates while pursuing clean energy.
It is the LPEA board’s duty to plan for the future. This subcommittee plans to look at all options. It would be irresponsible and alarmist to assume the subcommittee only plans to justify a buy out from LPEA’s Tri-State contract, as some have suggested.
Data provided by the subcommittee will arm us with the knowledge to make decisions our children can benefit from.
