I moved to Durango in ’76 and have subscribed to The Durango Herald when I could afford to. It was disappointing to read a letter to the editor (Herald, July 13) from a patron who no longer wants to subscribe because they feel the Herald has a political bias.
I would encourage the subscriber to reconsider. Think of what a local rag like the Herald is up against. Metta, X, the Bezos’ Post, Sinclair, Cambridge Analytica and the Murdock’s Fox dominate the media market, and they are hardly neutral.
That the Herald survives in this echo chamber of conspiracy theories and hyperbole is a miracle. The letter suggests attracting more subscribers by being politically “neutral.”
With Pizzagate, Kenyan-born presidents, stop the steal, the climate change “hoax,” immigrants eating pets and Epstein’s playlist, what does neutral even mean?
The Herald faces great challenges in today’s media circus. Maintaining fidelity to truthful reporting and generating enough clicks to survive financially is not a simple matter. I would encourage subscribers to continue their support for The Durango Herald. It is not an easy time to be a local newspaper.
