I am 12 years old, and I currently mountain bike with the Devo U-14 girls team. I have been around bikes my whole life, and started mountain biking when I was 7.
Right when I learned how to ride my first bike, I was taught the importance of a helmet. I know always to wear my helmet, no matter how short the distance or where I’m riding.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen more and more adults in our community not wearing helmets. It disappoints me. This is bad role modeling for the younger part of our community. If you have kids and don’t wear a helmet, your kids will think it is OK to skip wearing their helmets.
Some people think that helmets are uncool. I’ll tell you what’s uncool: getting your head smashed open on the curb. I think some of these adults could use a reminder, so here it is: Help yourself out. You never know when you could get into a serious accident.
Helmets are a good precaution to take and they can save your life. Wear a helmet!
