It’s starting to run

Warmer weather means river runners are getting itchy for action, including this crew in an inflatable kayak racing down the Animas River on Thursday afternoon just north of the Durango Community Recreation Center. The river levels rose from 280 cfs on Monday to 570 Thursday afternoon. The river remains closed to river users through the Whitewater Park at Smelter Rapid as construction continues through April 15. The plan is to have the river open April 16, said Scott McClain, city landscape architect. But he cautioned the completion date still could slip a bit.
