It’ll be a basketball weekend, and we’ll be there to cover it

Ignacio, Bayfield and Fort Lewis College will play in tournaments in Colorado and Texas

Three La Plata County high school basketball teams have reached the “Great Eight” of the CHSAA state tournaments, and we will be there to follow them along the way.

Durango Herald sports writer Karl Schneider will follow the Ignacio High School boys and girls basketball teams in the Class 2A state tournaments at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland before making the trip down to Denver to cover the Bayfield boys team in the Class 3A state quarterfinals against arch nemesis Alamosa High School at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Denver.

The No. 8 Ignacio girls will face No. 1 Yuma in the 2A quarterfinals at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, while the No. 6 Ignacio boys will face No. 3 Byers in the 2A quarterfinals at 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

KSUT Tribal Radio will broadcast the Ignacio games live. Listen locally on your FM Dial at 91.3FM Ignacio, 89.7 FM in Farmington/Northern New Mexico or on www.ksut.org.

Schneider will follow all three teams as long as they advance in the tournament.

Later this week, regional sports editor John Livingston will travel with Fort Lewis College to Canyon, Texas, for the NCAA Division II tournament, as the fourth-seeded Skyhawks will open play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against No. 5 Texas A+M Commerce in the South Central Region Tournament hosted by top-seed West Texas A&M.

For updates from all the big games, follow @karltschneider and @jlivi2 on Twitter.

It’s a huge week of basketball for a county that thrives on the hardwood.
