It’s a clean sheet on both sides

Demons and Panthers play to a 0-0 scoreless soccer draw in Cortez

Mental preparation has become a buzzword for the Durango High School girls soccer team.

DHS head coach Dalon Parker didn’t think the Demons did that well enough in a scoreless draw with Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday in Cortez.

“We weren’t up to par. We had trouble connecting passes throughout the entire game except for the last 10 or 20 minutes of overtime,” he said. “The opportunities that we did get, we couldn’t put them away.”

DHS (2-1-2, 2-1-2 Southwestern League) was shut out for the first time since its opener against Fruita Monument and picked up its fourth clean sheet of the season.

“We’re a young team, and that comes with those bumps,” Parker said. “I’m not worried, but I am concerned about how we mentally prepare ourselves for games. We’re starting to focus on that; once we mentally prepare properly, we play really well.”

The Demons next will host Montrose at 5 p.m. April 4 at Riverview Sports Complex.
