It’s a clean sweep for Bayfield XC

Two race wins. Two teams going to state.

Eva-Lou Edwards and Trevor Gabbard each won individual regional titles, and both the boys and girls teams for Bayfield High School finished third to advance to state at the Class 3A Region 1 cross country race Friday in Delta.

The Bayfield girls finished just three points out of first behind champion Moffat County, and the boys were 10 points behind regional champ Aspen. The top five teams and 15 individuals advanced to state.

Gabbard had some company near the top after finishing in 16 minutes, 12.1 seconds. Teammate Luke Webb was second in 16:37.8.

Bayfield’s Caleb Sapa was 21st in 18:00.7, Alex Knight 33rd in 18:34.4, Joey Sandry 58th in 20:59 and Alex Svanes 60th in 21:29.9.

Edwards, the defending state champion in Class 3A, won by more than a minute, finishing in 17 minutes, 56.7 seconds to remain undefeated on the season. Aubree Lorenzen was ninth in 20:15.4, Bridget Goddard 12th in 20:32.6, Danielle Miller 20th in 21:30.5, Maggie Zink 37th in 23:01.1, Lexa Fleming 39th in 23:07.1 and Cameron Spencer 50th in 30:10.9.

The CHSAA Class 3A Boys and Girls Cross Country State Championships will take place Oct. 26 at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. The boys race will start at 10 a.m., with the girls to follow at noon.
