It’s fair season in La Plata County!

Mark your calendars, this year’s La Plata County Fair will be held Aug. 6 to Aug. 11 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave. The week will be packed with adorable animals, impressive projects by 4-H’ers and community members, local vendors and fun activities for the whole family.

Every day of the fair features multiple livestock shows in the covered arena. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the pavilion to meet our 4-H members and their animals. You can also explore the Exhibit Hall, full of vendor booths and public entries, and the Extension Building, where more than 150 4-H projects will be on display, including shooting sports, welding, rocketry, photography, cake decorating and heritage arts. I’m incredibly proud of our 4-H members and the time, talent and dedication they’ve poured into these projects.

We’re especially excited to introduce a new event this year: “Saturday at the Fair Youth Carnival!” Bring the kids out for games, prizes, and fair fun on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 on the baseball field.

We’re also launching two new contests that will be a delight to watch:

4-H/FFA Livestock Fashion Show: at 4 p.m. Aug. 7. Our members will dress up their animals and strut their stuff down the “Cow Walk” for a fun and creative event.

Parent/Leader Showmanship: at 5 p.m. Aug. 8 Our 4-H leaders and parents work tirelessly behind the scenes all year long, so we’re giving them a chance to show off their skills and have some well-deserved fun.

The highlight of the week is always our Junior Livestock Sale, happening at 6 p.m. Aug. 9. This live auction is a fantastic way to support local youths, many of whom use the proceeds to help pay for college or fund next year’s project. If you cannot make it in person, no worries: Phone bidding will be available so you can participate from anywhere in the world.
