It’s hot outside: Durango hits 90 degrees Saturday

Sunday and Monday forecast hot and dry
A cottonwood tree bornes its seeds Friday in Durango. The high temperature reached 90 on Saturday at the Durango-La Plata County Airport this weekend and the first half of next week.

True to predictions, the temperature reached the 90s in Durango on Saturday, though it was two degrees off from record-breaking.

The National Weather Service at Grand Junction reported 90 degrees at the Durango-La Plata County Airport, which falls short of the 91-degree record high recorded June 18, 2002.

Temperatures are expected to climb higher into the mid-90s on Sunday, with a high of 97 predicted for Monday.

June is Southwest and West Central Colorado’s driest, but not hottest, month, National Weather Service Grand Junction forecaster Joe Ramey said.

“What’s happening this year is we have a big ridge of high pressure over northern New Mexico, which reaches Durango,” Ramey said. “It’s a big mountain of hot air in the atmosphere, and it’s right over you.”
